Semi- prefix to planing mean the boat hull is not fully opened to planing at high speed. planing boats use the gliding bow bottom surface on a chine boundary to ride up over the water and over the wave surface. the problem is when the boat is fully lifted at the high speed running condition over waves.. The hull is the watertight body of a ship or boat. atop the hull may be a deckhouse or some other form of superstructure, like a mast . the line where the hull meets the water surface is called the waterline .. Every definition of planing, semi planing and displacement is flawed because every boat has lift from buoyancy and dynamic lift from movement (which can be positive or negative – it actually varies through the length of the hull. water displaced + dynamic lift = total weight of boat, gear and crew. or planing force + displacement = total weight.
Hull characteristics. if the hull is a semi displacement type, with limited speed potential, it doesn't make sense to overpower the boat. conversely underpowering a planing hull will make a boat a real dog. some of the information necessary to make the many calculations are given in design textbooks..
